Happy Bonfire Night!

Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Night, is always November 5th. Or, in English, 5 November. Guy was a guy who failed to blow up Parliament back in the 17th century, so naturally English people have an entire day to celebrate him.

Horrible Histories explains how he failed:

The Wikipedia article is a fascinating look at how the holiday was celebrated, evolving from a time when the pope was burned in effigy to today. My town always has a huge bonfire and a legitimately organized fireworks display, although there are plenty of independent fireworks displays around too. Having grown up in a state with a ban on fireworks sales, I am extremely leery of any explosive not operated by professionals and am not okay with even a single lit sparkler around.
